Jonathan Scruggs, who has 15 years of basketball coaching experience begins his first season as head varsity basketball coach of Mercy’s women’s basketball program. In inheriting a team that went 3-20 last season, Coach Scruggs endeavors to re-institute a championship culture into the women’s basketball program by instilling a commitment to teamwork and discipline, honesty and integrity, and hard work and dedication on and off the court. He seeks to lay the groundwork for a foundation for success for the Mercy’s women’s basketball program, not only in the immediate, but for many years to come.
Scruggs arrives to Mercy after a very successful seven-year stint as the head varsity basketball coach at Elizabeth Seton High School in Bladensburg, Maryland, who competes in the nationally recognized and highly competitive Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC).
At Seton, Scruggs’s teams recorded 137 wins, had 4 WCAC Final Four appearances, won the 2014 Maryland Private School Championship, and participated in the top bracket at the 2016 Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, AZ. He was also named the 2014 WCAC Coach of the Year.
Under Scruggs’s helm, Elizabeth Seton sent 27 student-athletes to play basketball at the Division I, II, II, and JUCO levels and had 15 McDonald All-American nominees; 26 All WCAC team selections; 5 Washington Post All-Met selections; 3 1,000pt career scorers; and 4 players inducted into the National Honor Society.
Scruggs is married to Candace (Holmes) Scruggs, a Georgia native, and they were blessed with a daughter in September 2015, Sadie.
