Even though her high school volleyball career has ended, Our Lady of Mercy’s Olivia Schmitz is still making history.

On Nov. 5 at Blessed Trinity High School, the senior outside hitter was named First Team All-State after participating in the Georgia Volleyball Coaches’ Association Senior All-Star Game.

“It was just a fun time and an honor to be there,” Schmitz said.

“[Being named] All-State is the highest award outside of Player of the Year,” said Olivia Schmitz’s father and OLM volleyball coach Bill Schmitz. “She likes to play it down but that is pretty good.”

Certainly is when it is also the highest honor for a Lady Bobcat in program history.

This past season, Olivia Schmitz helped Our Lady of Mercy earn a 33-12 record and advance to the Sweet 16. She had 651 kills, 86 digs and 62 serving aces.

“We didn’t set any bars for ourselves but we wanted to do the best we could and I think we did better than I thought we ever would,” Olivia Schmitz said.

Next year, Schmitz, who has a 3.4 grade-point average, will attend Birmingham-Southern College and play volleyball there.

She said being a coach like her father is a possibility in the future.
