Students & Faculty Volunteer, Run for CdLS 5K

December 9th, 2011

On Saturday, December 3rd, a group of Mercy students, accompanied by faculty members Mr. Hofkes, Ms. O'Neill and Fr. Jimmy, traveled by bus down to Decatur to volunteer for the Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS) Foundation 5k fundraiser. The foundation raises awareness about CdLS and provides support to families affected by the condition.
The OLM students were the main volunteers at the event and did everything from race registration to handing out shirts, setting up the course to directing traffic, and even running in the 5K! The Mercy students did a wonderful job and represented our school extremely well.  In addition, their presence enabled the event coordinators who have a child with CdLS to be able to participate in the 5K for the first time. It was a great gift that our students were able to give that family.

Also, congratulations to Steven Johnston '13 and Ms. O’Neill who ran the 5k and were top finishers! Steven finished 2nd overall for both men and women and 1st in his age group (15-19) in just under 19 minutes.  Ms. O'Neill finished 1st overall for the females in just over 19 minutes.

Thanks again to Mr. Hofkes, Ms. O'Neill, Fr. Jimmy, and the student volunteers who gave up a Saturday morning to serve others so cheerfully!
