OLM's Model United Nations Team Competes

March 10th, 2011

Our Lady of Mercy’s Model UN team attended their first conference March 7th and 8th at Kennesaw State University. The thirteen member group represented two nations, Argentina and Vietnam. Students had to complete extensive research in order to write position papers and to become “experts” on their country’s stand on multiple global issues such as ensuring rights of refugees, universal food safety programs, the effectiveness of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, insuring the peaceful uses of outer space, the use of narcotics and drugs as a means of funding terrorism, and many others.

The team members are

Seniors:   Craig Sage and Tynese St. Cyr

Juniors:   Alex Campbell, Robert Gould, Amelia Fitzgerald, Monica Norris, Bryn Ambrose, Jayla Johnson, Will Dunphy, and Nicole Woods

Freshmen:   Meghan Lowther, Dwayne Flores, and Karen Calderon

The conference ended Tuesday with an awards ceremony where Robert Gould received an Honorable Mention for his representation of Argentina on the GA3 committee regulating social, cultural, and humanitarian issues. We are very proud of Robert and all our delegates for their hard work and dedication to these issues for our first ever Model UN conference competition.   Faculty advisors, Clay Cushman and Rhonda Anderson, look forward to the growth of Model UN at OLM and encourage able students to give consideration to applying for the 2011 – 2012 team which will begin work in August.
