Mercy Volleyball storms into Elite Eight
October 20th, 2010
The Mercy Volleyball team once again broke program records by advancing to the "Elite Eight" in the GHSA State Volleyball Tournament. After a long trip up to Gordon Lee (on the Chattanooga, TN line), the Lady Bobcats went to work defeating the Trojans 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 26-24). Enduring several failed intimidation tactics such as the scoreboard reading Home 25, Visitors 0 upon walking in the gym and a hostile crowd, the girls stepped up and fought through some errors to get the job done. Senior Brittany Smith led the attack with 17 kills while senior Amanda Miles and junior Olivia Schmitz had 13 and 10 respectively. Sophomore Jenny Bui led the team defensively with 26 digs. Senior Nicole Gagnier paved the way with 33 assists.
The Cats will have to wait until late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning to find out their opponent and match location for this Saturday's "Elite Eight" match, as the process for the volleyball state tournament is to re-seed at the "Elite Eight" stage.
This is the first time the Mercy Volleyball program has been to the "Sweet Sixteen" as well as the "Elite Eight". In sports like volleyball and basketball, this is no easy feat. The entire Mercy team has worked very hard to get to this point and continues to work hard to achieve the team's self-given motto: Exceed Expectations!
