SJE Students, Families Support Basketball Night
February 5th, 2011
Students and families from St. John the Evangelist Catholic School (SJE) in Hapeville came out in record numbers for Mercy's annual SJE Night during the Bobcats' home basketball games against Pinecrest on Saturday.
Prior to the event, SJE was notified that for every grade represented by at least five students, the school would receive $100 in tuition vouchers to Mercy. They more than surpassed the requirement with 100 SJE students in attendance, representing all grades from Pre-Kindergarten to 8th grade. With this, SJE earned $1,000 in Mercy tuition vouchers for the 2011-2012 school year.
Then, Dr. Jeanne Rast, science teacher at SJE, was given an opportunity to shoot baskets for even more tuition dollars. With tips from St. John's basketball coach Herman Lum, Dr. Rast sank both lay-ups and a free-throw to secure $800 more in vouchers. That gave St. John's a total of $1,800 in Mercy tuition vouchers - the best outcome for any church or school participating in our halftime competitions to date!
In addition, Mercy, St. John's and Pinecrest fans alike were treated to a halftime show performed by the SJE Dance Team of young boys and girls, led by Elisa Yates, Mercy's Step Team coach and OLM and SJE parent. It was truly a great night for Catholic schools.
Thank you to Karen Vogtner, SJE Principal, and all of the SJE families, staff, and students who supported our event!
