Cross Country Intrasquad-Alumni Classic

On Saturday, August 13, the Mercy Cross Country team took part in its annual Intrasquad-Alumni time trial. In all, 35 athletes and 15 alumni took part in this tuneup race.
The boys' race was taken out early by alumni Kevin Schilling, who led the race for the first 200 meters. Former Mercy State champion runners Thomas Raville and Richard Schrade then quickly made up ground and led for almost 2 miles. Upon enter the final lap of the race current Mercy runners Huy Trinh, Nile Freeman, and John Lynch overtook the leaders and finished 1, 2, 3 in very strong fashion. Nile Freeman outsprinting his teammates for his first victory. Richard Schrade was the first Alumni finisher.
On the girls side, senior Colleen Kelly led the team for the first time in her career and was the top female finisher in a field that included State Champion Sarah Hohenberger and her sister, Lauren Hohenberger, who was the former 2 -mile school record holder.
"A lot of new runners had their first taste of competition today," said Coach Matt Hofkes after the event. "Our older kids ran great today and new runners Maddox Caporini, Minh Bui, Canton Faber, Alex Hennie-Roed, Emma Dunphy, and Megan Lowther all showed promise. We have a long way to go before November, but the work that the runners put in over the summer definitely seems to have paid dividents."
The alumni who returned included former individual State Champions Matt Lethbridge '09, Jake Lethbridge '09, and Sarah Hohenberger '09, former state runner-up Thomas Raville '08, All-State runner Richard Schrade '08, team State Champion Udare Santha, as well as Lauren Hohenberger '07, Shannon Kelly '10, Matthew Maker '10, Joshua Vuong '10, and Kevin Schilling '10.
The Mercy Cross Country team's first competition takes place on Saturday, August 27 at home at the Mercy Invitational. Races start at 8 AM.
